Accordingly, we need to locate bank accounts, investment portfolios, real estate holdings, vehicles, personal property, and any other valuables. Once identified, each asset is carefully appraised to determine its current market value. This information is then compiled into a formal document called an Inventory and Appraisal (Forms DE-160/161) which is filed with the court.
This step is essential because it provides a clear picture of the estate’s financial standing, allowing for the equitable distribution of assets among heirs and beneficiaries. Moreover, a thorough inventory helps us identify any potential debts or taxes that need to be addressed.
I recall one case where a family was unaware of a substantial life insurance policy held by their deceased loved one. Discovering this asset significantly impacted the estate’s value and allowed for greater distributions to the beneficiaries. Conversely, without a thorough inventory, such assets might go unnoticed, potentially leading to financial hardship for those entitled to them.
